Behind the scenes: cake chaos!

This weekend, my mom and I were asked to make a Little Mermaid cake for a friend's daughter. We love doing cakes, and this little girl happens to be my former student (from my student teaching days). Thus, we had to say yes...although character cakes are crazy! It takes time and detail to make them go over successfully. If you mess up a character cake, the little ones will be hugely disappointed. Usually with a cake like this, we make all the fondant pieces the day before so they have time to "set up". Yesterday, my mom began making these pieces and soon I had to get in on it.You see, my mom's Ariel was channeling Princess Fiona instead. I'll let you be the judge ;)....

So, after looking up Ariel pictures for better inspiration, we were off to a fresh start. Things started to turn up. Pieces were coming together. Then, we began making the cake. Here it is barely covered with fondant.

All of the food coloring used...goodness!

Here is the "Cake Boss" in all her glory. You know what? Now that she is going to be a grandma, her goal is to retire, babysit, and make cakes. Thus, email me if you would love this crazy-cake-momma to make you a cake.

Looking better, huh? Below is the finished product. So excited with how it turned out, and I hope that little Tenley loves it! She deserves a fabulous cake.

Happy Happy Birthday Tenley!! And to all of you friends reading this, I used a lens I NEVER shoot with for these pictures. I'm kind of loving the creamy bokeh effect. So, in honor of this new lens, I am offering a free shoot to the first person who messages me on facebook. That means 20 free images! Ideally, this lens is great for shooting 1-2 persons. Can't wait to hear from you! Enjoy the three-day weekend. :)
